About The Event

Our first talk of the year will be given by diplomat and technology scholar José-Miguel Bello Villarino.

José-Miguel will be engaging in a fireside chat with UCA Executive Manager Will Cesta on what ChatGPT and its implications for higher education.

We will hear some observations about what ChatGPT really is, its relevance in the wider AI context, and what AI systems and ChatGPT might mean for universities and colleges in Australia and abroad.

José-Miguel is a Research Fellow at the Law School and the Institutions programme of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S). He is a member of the Diplomatic Corps of Spain (on leave) and previously worked in different capacities for the European Union. He was the co-winner of the 2022 Scotiabank Global AI + Regulation Emerging Scholar Award and in 2021 he was a Fulbright-Schuman scholar at the Harvard Law School. His current research focuses on regulatory approaches to ADM and Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially on how to deal with risks derived from the operation of AI systems from a comparative approach. He is particularly concerned about how to approach AI foundation models and large language models (such as ChatGPT) that do not have a concrete objective but can be deployed and used in many different ways. He has published in several languages in some of the most prestigious journals in law and social sciences, including the Harvard International Law Journal, the NYU Journal of International Law and Politics, the Max Planck Yearbook of UN Law and Social Indicators Research.
